I am a GP (family medicine specialist) and public health doctor, working as a partner in a general practice in Stockton-on-Tees. I am also the Chief Executive Officer of Hartlepool and Stockton Health (H&SH), a Federation of 37 separate general practices working together to provide community-based health care.
I recently spent four years on the Governing Body of Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) where I was the GP lead for the Stockton locality. I also led the commissioning of mental health, learning disabilities and dementia services for the CCG. We achieved a significant increase in patients accessing psychological therapies, improved dementia identification in the community and worked with the voluntary and community sector co-designing social health interventions.
I represent local general practice on the Stockton-on-Tees and Hartlepool Health and Wellbeing Boards, providing strategic input and leadership.
I have spent my career in the North East of England and in Uganda, where I led a hospital and community health program for five years, including women’s health, malaria, HIV and children’s health programs. I designed an implemented a community health insurance scheme that gives free health at the point of need to 60,000 rural people.
I trained as a doctor in Newcastle upon Tyne, where I also obtained a masters degree in public health. I spent two years as GP clinical lead for Public Health for five Tees Valley Local Authorities. I also started and ran (along with my father, Bill Williams) the Arrival Practice, a general practice for asylum seekers and refugees in Stockton-on-Tees from 2002 to 2006.
I am a trustee of Arc, Stockton Arts Centre and a board member of Catalyst, the voluntary sector coordinating body in Stockton.
I am passionate about reducing health inequalities, improving access to health services and about improving access to sport and the arts for disadvantaged groups.
I enjoy taking part in swimming, cycling, running and triathlon events and l live in Stockton with my partner Vicky and daughters Emmeline and Mira.
